Avenida da Liberdade 112, Lisbon

Halfway up the avenue

Far enough from the Baixa that the streets are quiet by eleven, close enough that you will walk there every day without thinking about it.

The address

Where exactly we are

Number 112 sits on the eastern side of Avenida da Liberdade, between Avenida metro and Marquês de Pombal, where the avenue is still lined with jacarandas and the pavement is the black-and-white calcada that gets slippery in the rain.

The door is set back behind two lime trees and is easy to miss from a car — tell the driver it is opposite the Tivoli side and one block south of Rua Rosa Araújo.

The walk we recommend

08:00

Down the avenue

Breakfast in the Salão Verde, then walk south to Restauradores and into the Baixa before the shops open and the grid is empty.

10:30

Up to the castle

Through Alfama on foot rather than by tram — the tram is full by ten. Come back down through Graça for the miradouro.

14:00

Lunch by the water

The Ribeira market or, better, a taxi to Belem for the monastery and a pastel de nata straight from the oven at the original bakery.

18:30

Back for the gold hour

Up the hill to Príncipe Real, a drink in the garden square, then home along Rua da Escola Politécnica as the avenue lights come on.
